Fulbright-Nehru Environmental Leadership Program Fellow and a renowned scientist & conservator, Debal Deb discovered a rice species ‘Garib- Sal’ that contains medicinal properties. Dr. Deb’s search for rice varieties began nearly 20 years ago in remote areas of West Bengal largely populated by indigenous people. Over the years, he has collected 1,200 indigenous rice varieties from 13 states across north-eastern, eastern and southern India.
