Brief Bio:

Suman Mukhopadhyay’s theatre and films deal with the socio-political domain and engage in critical assessment of the contemporaneity. His explorations into the subaltern realities and histories have given a distinction mark to his theatre productions and filmmaking. Suman’s major films are Herbert (2005), which won the National Award for Best Regional Film; Chaturanga (2008); Kangal Malsat (2013); Asamapta (2017); and Nazarband (2020), which had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival. Suman is one of India’s leading theatre directors and has done productions ranging from European drama to major adaptations of Bengali masterpieces and productions of Indian plays. He participated in various national and international theatre and film festivals, including Busan, Montreal, Dubai, Munich, San Francisco, Seattle, Kerala, London, Melbourne, etc. His major plays are Teesta Paarer Brittanto, Mephisto, King Lear, and Bisarjan. He was conferred with a script development award from the Motion Picture Association and Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Brisbane in 2017. Recently, his film Posham Pa won an award at the Female Filmmakers Festival, Berlin. Suman taught and directed plays at UC Berkeley, Toledo University, Kalamazoo College, and Barnard College in the U.S. Suman works out of Kolkata and Mumbai.

As a Fulbright scholar, Suman is engaging through workshops and performances with the Bengali theatre community of India and Bangladesh to understand their negotiations of ideas of nation, nationality, and allegiance, and to unpack the levels of discourse they spawn in their aesthetic and performative choices.
